Plant Spirit Medicine: Yarrow

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Energetic Message: “My gift is to protect with a shield of light, revitalizing and repairing the aura.”*

Flower Essence: “Yarrow supports inner radiance and strength of aura, compassionate awareness, inclusive sensitivity, and beneficent healing forces.”^

Doctrine of Signature: If one looks closely at the leaves, they look like veins coming off an artery; if you feel them, they feel dry to the touch even though they are still very much alive. It is no coincidence that yarrow is an excellent remedy for toning (astringing) and healing the circulatory system.

Traditional Medicinal Uses: Yarrow is a great healer of wounds externally and is famous for its styptic properties. The leaves and flowers taken as a tea are great to help break a fever and reduce water retention. Internally, it is also used to tone veins and capillaries, support women’s reproductive health, and facilitate healthy digestion. Its stalks have been used in China for thousands of years to cast the I Ching. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is considered a “heal all” due to its multiple healing uses. Yarrow shares the same name as the infamous Geek soldier Achilles (meaning a thousand leaves) who used the herb to heal his soldiers in the battle field. Achilles used it on wounded soldiers for good reason. The poultice, made from fresh leaves, makes an excellent wound remedy because it quickly stops bleeding and it has antimicrobial properties.
